Ixchiq: The New Chikungunya Vaccine Now Available at Summit Health Travel Clinics!

We’re thrilled to announce that Ixchiq, the new Chikungunya vaccine, is now available at all Summit Health travel clinics across Canada! As one of the first clinics to carry Ixchiq, we’re committed to providing our travelers with the most current preventative health options.

Who Should Consider the Chikungunya Vaccine?

Chikungunya is a mosquito-borne virus that can cause severe joint pain, fever, rash, and other debilitating symptoms. As global travel expands, so does the risk of exposure to Chikungunya, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions.

IXCHIQ is a live vaccine given as one injection. It is authorized in Canada from age 12, but it is not recommended for every traveller. Studies have shown a strong antibody response; how well it prevents illness and how long protection lasts are still being studied.

Canadian guidance suggests considering IXCHIQ for adults aged 18 to 64 at high risk of infection, such as during an outbreak, after discussing the possible benefits and side effects with a healthcare professional. It is not routinely recommended for other travellers in this age group.

IXCHIQ is not recommended for people aged 65 or older because of safety concerns. It must not be given during pregnancy or to people with a weakened immune system. Guidance for ages 12 to 17 is still under review. Our nurse can review your travel plans, health conditions and medications to help you understand your options.

Keep protecting yourself from mosquito bites, whether or not you are vaccinated. Read more on our chikungunya vaccine page and in the Canadian Immunization Guide.
